Never Had a Daddy

(Mike Maves)
Son I was born on the Kanawha shore
Round here talk is cheap and the people are poor
Started learning bout work when I was four
At my mother’s garage out on 64

Daddy wasn’t home when I was born
Bein’ off somewhere fightin’ a war
When I was one there’s a knock at the door
They gave us a flag and his uniform

You see son your daddy never had a daddy
At least not a daddy I could know
Sometimes I stare off sorta vacant
Sometime I may seem a little bit low
It’s got nothing to do with you son
I love you through and through
I’m just thinkin’ bout a man I never got to know

When I was 9 I got a baseball glove
My mother couldn’t catch
But she sure could love
So every night to the park we’d go
A boy and his mother learnin’ how to throw (It was there with my mother that I learned to throw)

You see son your daddy never had a daddy
At least not a daddy I could know
Sometimes I stare off sorta vacant
Sometime I may seem a little bit low
It’s got nothing to do with you son
I love you through and through
I’m just thinkin bout a man I never got to know

Now 29 years have just rolled by me
Strange the way this time all slid
I knew nothing bout being a husband
Had to teach myself just what a daddy did

So son I guess you’d think I’d have a thing about war
But there’s things in this life worth fightin for
And sure a father’s something I never had
But it still seems right to thank my dad

You see son, I guess your daddy really had a daddy
Just not a daddy I could know
Daddy did something for his country
He was just a fella that didn’t come home
It’s got nothing to do with you son
I love you through and through
I’m just thinkin bout a man I never got to know
I’m just thinkin bout a man I never got to know
